The objective of the 2022-founded African BioGenome Project (AfricaBP) is to sequence 100,000 genomes in ten years (Ebenezer et al., 2022).
The Open Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics was founded by the Knowledge Exchange and Industry Grand Challenge of AfricaBP to serve for the development of human resources throughout the continent (Sharaf, et al., 2023, 2024).
In order to develop project based genomics and bioinformatics leadership throughout Africa, AfricaBP is collaborating with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, USA, to introduce the first phase of an extensive leadership program: the African Biodiversity Fellowship for Emerging Genomics Leaders.

African scientists will be prepared to accomplish any or all of the following three goals with the training:
- Building interdisciplinary team science leadership in genomics and/or bioinformatics is necessary to establish and manage the proposed AfricaB
- Open Institute Centers of Excellence on biodiversity genomics and bioinformatics.
- Creation of research initiatives in bioinformatics and/or biodiversity genomics at African universities.
- Creation of courses in bioinformatics and/or biodiversity genomics across African universities.
Fellowship type, duration, and cohort
- Training in genomics leadership for early- and mid-career African researchers:
- Application deadline: Monday, March 18, 2024
- Tuesday, March 19, 2024 is when the application evaluation and selection process gets underway.
- Notification of accepted applications: April 15, 2024, Monday
